In versions of 16 GB and 32 GB, machine arrives in Brazil until August 9.
Companies also showed current line of notebooks and cheaper.
At the opening of an event for developers in San Francisco (California, USA) this Monday (8), Apple showed a new version of the mobile multimedia company, called iPhone 3GS. According to Phil Schiller, vice president of marketing of products, the new model is twice as fast as its predecessor, the iPhone 3G.
Rather than indicating the rumors that preceded the event, the company’s founder, Steve Jobs, did not attend the presentation. He faced health problems and is out of business since January 2009, on medical leave. According to press reports, Jobs is ready to return to Apple by the end of June.

The new model of iPhone comes in versions for 16GB and 32GB - the 3G came with 8 GB or 16 GB - and will cost between $ 199 and $ 299 U.S.. The iPhone 3G will market the U.S. $ 99. According to Apple, the iPhone 3GS available in the U.S. on June 19 and will reach 80 countries - including Brazil - until August.
The data transmission capacities of the new unit will be up to 7.2 Mbps (megabits per second) against the current 3.6 Mbps. The camera of the unit will have 3 megapixels and the ability to record video. The smartphone also has new processor, and is able to load programs in half the time of its predecessor.
In addition to making calls via voice command, users can control iTunes with just talk. The device has an integrated digital compass, to facilitate the location of users on maps. “Can I ask what my iPhone is playing at that moment and he will disclose the song title and artist name,” said Schiller.
In the event, the company also presented details of the new iPhone’s operating system, new models of notebooks, the operating system Mac OS X, called Snow Leopard and Safari 4 browser. The presentation was led by Phil Schiller, vice president of marketing of products, which had replaced the chief executive of Apple at MacWorld in January.
iPhone OS 3.0
The new operating system on the phone, the iPhone OS 3.0, has more than 100 new features, including the much anticipated “copy and paste,” and will be available from June 17. Customers of some operators (for now 29) can also send multimedia messages, called MMS, and parents can not control the content for their children.
The platform also allows the iPhone to be used as a modem connection: on Macs or PCs, the technology works via USB cable or Bluetooth. A button will allow the operation in different languages: they are over 30, including the new Arabic, Greek, Korean, Thai and Hebrew.
A function called Find My iPhone, available for guests of the MobileMe service, shows a map where the equipment is. When you send an alert, the device emits a sound that announces the loss of the product, even if it has been left in quiet mode. If the iPhone really gone, its owner to remotely erase all data stored on it.
3.0 The operating system will be free for users of the iPhone, but it will cost $ 9.95 for iPod Touch users.
How to get an iPhone 3GS:
The phone goes on sale this Friday, June 19, and is available from O2 stores, Carphone Warehouse and Apple shops. It would be sensible to pre-order a handset, because although retailers are not giving details of their allocation, it’s likely that some larger stores in major cities may experience stock shortages. To avoid queuing only to be disappointed, pre-order online. Some stores will be opening at 8am for those who cannot wait, but check with local retailers. In the US, AT&T is already thought to have sold out of its pre-order allocation, but this does not seem to be the case in the UK. You can activate your new iPhone at home by connecting it to your computer and opening up iTunes; you no longer have to activate the device in-store.
If you’re one of the millions of UK iPhone users still locked in to your 18-month iPhone 3G contract, you may be eligible for an early upgrade to the iPhone 3GS. O2 has a Priority List Service, which categorises customers as Platinum, Gold or Silver members depending on their monthly spend.
Platinum customers continually spending at least £80 per month can upgrade to the 3GS six months before their iPhone 3G contract ends; for Gold customers, continually spending at least £50 per month, they can upgrade three months before the end of their contract; and for Silver customers, continually spending at least £35 per month, they can upgrade one month before the end of their 18-month contract. Give O2 a call to find out which category you fall in to and the anticipated date of your upgrade.
If, however, you absolutely must have the iPhone 3GS on the day of launch, but are still locked in your existing 18-month contract, then I’m afraid you only have one option: buy the new iPhone, sign up to a new 18-month contract, but commit to also paying off the remaining months of your existing agreement. So, for example, if you are on the £44.05 monthly tariff and still have six months left to run, you’ll have to pay the outstanding balance of £205.56, on top of new monthly tariff payments and the cost of the new handset. Ouch.
Carphone Warehouse, clearly sensing an opportunity to capitalise on O2’s controversial pricing decision, is offering existing iPhone customers cash back on their old iPhones when they upgrade to the iPhone 3GS. The retailer will give customers a £100 rebate if they swap in a first-generation iPhone, £170 for an 8GB iPhone 3G, or £180 for the 16GB iPhone 3G model. They will then be able to offset this saving against the purchase of an iPhone 3GS.
For some, the iPhone 3GS will be an unnecessary expense. While the digital compass, improved camera, video-recording and voice control are exclusive to the 3GS, hundreds of other features will be available to existing iPhone users on Wednesday evening with a free software update. This iPhone 3.0 software will bring cut, copy and paste, device-wide search, landscape keyboards, picture text-messaging and internet tethering to current iPhone owners.
Give iPhone 3.0 a whirl before you break the bank to swap up to the new iPhone 3GS.
